HOUSTON, Texas - The East Carolina track and field program finished competition on Saturday at the Athletics and Alumni Center on the campus of the University of Houston. During day two, the Pirates earned four medalist honors while also producing a new school record in the pole vault.
As for the team portion, the men finished fifth while the women turned in a 12th-place result. Additionally, the Rice women and Houston men each captured their third consecutive championships
In the final day of competition, East Carolina senior Kris Bell joined Seun Adigun of Houston in successfully defending their 2008 C-USA titles in the men's and women's 60-meter hurdles, respectively. Bell crossed the finish line with a time of 8.05 seconds in the men's final while Adigun clocked a time of 8.20 on the women's side.
Adian Sanderson and Kevin Thompson both took home medalist honors. Sanderson placed second in the finals of the 60-meter dash, notching a time of 6.83. Meanwhile, Thompson grabbed second-place in the 200-meter event, checking in at 21.90, his second-best time of the season. Additionally, Thompson placed fifth in the 60-meters (6.95) while Sanderson turned in a fourth-place result in the 200 (22.15).
In the distance events, co-captains Jarrett Newby and Matt Dennish notched fourth and fifth-place results, respectively, in the 800-meter and mile run events. Newby checked in with a time of 1:53.07 while Dennish finished his mile in 4:22.30.
The men's 4X400m relay title went to UTEP who clocked a time of 3:18.15 while East Carolina finished second in 3:18.63. Memphis recorded a third-place time of 3:21.57.
In the field events, freshman Sebastien Biau set a new school standard in the pole vault on Friday, notching a vault of 4.31 meters.
Houston's head coach Leroy Burrell was awarded the C-USA Indoor Track & Field men's Coach of the Year crown while Jim Bevan of Rice was honored on the women's side.
Conference USA schools will compete in various Last Chance meets around the nation before the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 13-14 in College Station, Texas, on the campus of Texas A&M.
As for the Pirates, they will have one last chance to gain entry into the NCAA Indoor Championships with participation in the Virginia Tech Last chance Meet, slated for March 6-7 in Blacksburg, Va.
