Track And Field Opens Outdoor Season

WINSTON SALEM, N.C. and CONWAY, S.C. - The East Carolina track and field program began its outdoor season by splitting time between the Wake Forest Open in Winston Salem, N.C. and the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational at Conway, S.C. In all, the Pirates turned in 16 top 15 results.
In the track events for the ladies at Wake Forest, Funsha Jackson finished sixth in the prelims of the 100m dash, notching a time of 12.43 to qualify for the finals. She then took 12th in the finals, clocking in at 12.52. Another highlight was freshman Tara Wilson, who collected sixth-place in the finals of the 3000m run with a time of 10:27.54 while Lisa Delorenzo was 15th, checking in at 10:51.24. In the 4x100 relay, East Carolina recorded a time of 48.49, good for seventh-place. Then, Taylor Connor tied for first in her high jump event with a career-high mark of 1.58m while Meghan Horne finished sixth in the other with the same jump.
For the men, Kevin Thompson continued his strong season with a second-place finish in the 100m dash (10.87) before notching a third-place result in the 200m dash (21.60). Then, in the 400m run, Christopher Richardson and Ron Wright recorded eighth and 15th-place finishes, respectively (48.34, 48.93). Additionally, Matthew Dennish turned in a third-place showing with a time of 1:52.90 in the 800m run while Mario Briscoe sat 13th with a time of 15.81 in the 110m hurdles. Andrew Nastasiak closed out the meet for the Pirates with a 12th-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase, turning in a time of 10:09.11.
Over at Coastal Carolina, Danielle Eiler began her outdoor season with a second-place finish in the discus (44.93m) before Charlene Grady and Meagan Lewis earned third and fifth-place nods in the hammer throw with marks of 50.86m and 47.46m, respectively. Freshman Nicole Tozzi showed well in the javelin, notching a throw of 40.17m, collecting second-place honors. Then, for the men, Daniel Varela picked up third-place in the hammer with a heave of 51.62 while freshman Sebastien Biau accrued 5,572 points in the decathlon to take fifth.
East Carolina continues the outdoor season next weekend, competing in the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University. The meet is scheduled for March 27-28.
