ECU Records Fall At Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. - The East Carolina track and field program enjoyed a highly successfull weekend in Raleigh, participating in the Raleigh Relays at the Paul Derr Track. In all, the Pirates turned in 13 top 10 finishes, notched a NCAA Regional qualifying mark and set two school records.
In the 5,000-meter run, sophomore Brittany Copeland smashed the 15-year old school record time of 16:59.61 by finishing in 16:33.48 while freshman Tara Wilson checked in at 14th with a time of 17:52.07. Then, in the pole vault, Stephanie McDougal turned in a seventh-place finish, notching a mark of 3.35m before Danielle Eiler broke her own school record in the discus event, recording a throw of 46.77m. Kim Kanala also participated in the discus, notching a mark of 40.26 to take 15th-place. The hammer event was exceptionally strong for the ladies, as five Pirates finished in the top 15 in Charlene Grady (fourth, 50.16m), Maegan Lewis (fifth, 49.85m), Ashleigh Lee (11th, 46.68), Kanala (13th, 46.65) and Kim Woodson (15th, 46.03m).
Kevin Thompson got the men off to a good start, placing sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.71 before earning a spot in the NCAA regionals in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 21.28. Then Zachary Montijo followed that performance up by qualifying for the 2009 Junior National meet in the 1500-meter run by running a 3:53.84. In the 5000-meter run, Michael Scott recorded a sixth-place finish with a time of 16:13.66 before the sprint medley and 4x400 relay teams notched third and fifth-place results, respectively, with times of 3:20.28 and 3:12.03. Finally, Sam Barnhardt represented ECU in the javelin, grabbing 10th with a throw of 49.95m
The track and field program will be back in action next Saturday, travelling to Cullowhee, N.C. for a quad meet with Appalachian State, UNC Wilmington and Western Carolina.
