Pirates Shine At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The East Carolina track and field program turned in a solid showing at the 115th running of the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field. The Pirates won an event title while notching two NCAA regional qualifying marks.
The 4x100 relay team of Adian Sanderson, Jerek Hewett, Anthony Green and Kevin Thompson qualified for the IC4A final and edged out the team from Buffalo to take first-place with an NCAA regional time of 40.57. In the 4x200, ECU took second-place as Sanderson, Mario Briscoe, Ron Wright and Kevin Thompson clocked in at 1:24.86. Then, with Matt Dennish replacing Ron Wright for the sprint relay, the Pirates grabbed ninth with a time of 3:22.10, edging out squads from Texas and Maryland.
In the field, Jacques Ray turned in his personal-best score in the decathlon with 5,592 points while teammate Sebastien Biau scored a 5,547.
For the women, the 4x800 relay team of Samantha Lichtner, Hollie Brooks, Amanda Lapp and Tara Wilson took 21st-place with a solid time of 9:16.59. Then, Brittany Copeland provided the top highlight of the meet for the Pirates, breaking her own school record by .3 seconds in the 5,000m run with a time of 16:33.18. Running unattached in the same event, Nicole Briggs and Tara Wilson turned in times of 17:08 and 17.33, respectively.
ECU will participate in one more meet before the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, traveling to Durham for the Duke Twilight Meet. The event is scheduled for May 3 at Wallace Wade Stadium.
