GREENVILLE, N.C. – After defeating Virginia Commonwealth and Gardner-Webb to begin the season, the East Carolina soccer team is ranked No. 10 in the Central Region, according to a release Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Pirates are one of five squads from Conference USA to be ranked in the Central Region.
In its first two games, East Carolina has outscored its opponents 6-1 and taken 17 more shots. Sophomore Kimmy Cummings leads the team in goals with two while classmate Leah Bagonis and freshman Chrissy Gratz are tied for the top spot in assists with two each.
On defense for the Pirates, junior Jen Kurowicki and freshman Berit Hansen have split time in goal and combined to make eight saves. In both contests, Kurowicki has started and played the first half with Hansen coming in at the start of the second. Sunday against Gardner-Webb, the duo blanked the Runnin’ Bulldogs, recording the first shutout in either of their careers.
In the Central Region, Texas A&M of the Big 12 Conference is the top-ranked team while C-USA member Memphis checks in third. Also representing C-USA in the rankings are UAB (sixth), UCF (eighth) and Colorado College (10th).
ECU returns to action Friday at 4 p.m., hosting Stony Brook. In the all-time series with the Seawolves, neither team has recorded a victory as the two matches have each ended in ties.
