GREENVILLE, N.C. - After playing rival N.C. State to a 2-2 draw Friday night in Raleigh, the East Carolina soccer team (3-1-1) will wrap up the weekend at 2 p.m. Sunday against former Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion (3-3).
Old Dominion holds an 8-3 series advantage over East Carolina, but the teams have met only twice since 2001, when the Pirates left the Colonial Athletic Association for Conference USA. In 2006, the Monarchs won 1-0 in overtime at home as Katie Watson scored on an assist from Jenni Purdom in the 99th minute. A year later, ECU returned the favor with a 1-0 OT victory in Greenville. Amy Szilard scored the winner for the Pirates off a free kick from Nicole Moore with two minutes remaining in overtime.
Wilcox’s Offense On Display ...
Junior tri-captain Bailey Wilcox scored two goals in each of her first two seasons. This year, following the graduation of last season’s leading scorer, Blair Heffner, Wilcox has stepped up her offensive game.
She has already scored three times, netting a goal against Gardner-Webb, Stony Brook and N.C. State. Wilcox is on pace to break her season high in shots as she has six this year, all of them being on goal. She took 10 last season and 15 as a freshman.
Leaders In Conference USA ...
A look at the league statistics, through Sept. 6 games, shows the Pirates leading C-USA in assists (12) and assists per game (3.00). Last year, the Pirates set the program record for assists in a season with 44.
Two Is The Magic Number ...
Since the start of the 2006 season, ECU has posted a 28-0-3 record when scoring two or more goals. The three ties occurred Friday at N.C. State and twice last season in a 2-2 draw at UAB on Oct. 24 and the following game’s 3-3 deadlock at home against regular-season co-champion Memphis on Oct. 26.
Tough To Beat In OT ...
Since the start of the 2007 season, the Pirates have gone 5-1-10 in games that have stretched into overtime or double-overtime. The only loss occurred at UCF on Oct. 7, 2007, when Yvonne George scored with 58 seconds remaining in the second OT. In 2008, East Carolina went 4-0-4 in games that went extra time.
