GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina soccer team will conclude its non-conference games this weekend. Tonight, the Pirates travel to Coastal Carolina for a 7 p.m. contest.
Today will be just the second meeting between East Carolina and Coastal Carolina. A year ago in Greenville, the Chanticleers defeated ECU 2-1. Coastal Carolina's Emily McColl and the Pirates' Madison Keller tallied first-half goals less than five minutes apart. Ashleigh Gunning scored the Chanticleers' game-winning goal at 78:31 on an assist from Sarah McPartlan.
The Pirates will finish this weekend's games Sunday by hosting in-state rival UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m. for Beach Day at Bunting Field. Fans are encouraged to bring beach towels and chairs and will be allowed to sit on the grass surrounding the track.
A Strong Start ...
Last Sunday's 1-0 win over Old Dominion gave the Pirates a 4-1-1 record. In East Carolina history, only the 1999 team with its five wins has had more victories through the first six games. Four other times ECU has recorded four wins in the first six games, but all four of those teams also had two losses.
Hansen Remains Undefeated ...
Freshman goalkeeper Berit Hansen recorded the victory Sunday over Old Dominion, earning a shutout in her first career start. The win moved Hansen to 3-0-0 this season.
Not since Lauren Church began her career 2-0-1 in 2002 has an ECU goalkeeper been unbeaten through her first three career decisions.
Gratz Gets On The Board ...
Freshman Chrissy Gratz scored her first collegiate goal last Friday at N.C. State to give the Pirates a 2-2 tie. She scored at 23:33 after assisting on Bailey Wilcox's goal at 13:34. Gratz joins Rachel Wechsler as the only freshmen to have a three-point game for ECU this season.
Wilcox On A Roll ...
Junior tri-captain Wilcox has scored one goal in four of the Pirates' past five games. Since scoring at Gardner-Webb Aug. 30, Wilcox's only game in which she did not score was at No. 8 Wake Forest Sept. 6. Her most recent goal was the game-winner Sunday against Old Dominion.
The last Pirate to have nearly as impressive of a goal scoring streak was fellow tri-captain Alexis Foltz. Last season as a junior, Foltz scored four goals within six games from Sept. 26- Oct. 12.
