BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Amanda Malkiewicz scored her team-best fifth goal as East Carolina and UAB played to a one-all double-overtime tie Sunday afternoon at West Campus Field. The tie is the first for the Pirates (7-6-1, 2-3-1) this season, while the Blazers (6-6-2, 2-2-2) record their second.
Malkiewicz put back a blocked shot during the 22nd minute of play for the Pirates lone goal. Rachel Wechsler's shot was blocked by UAB keeper Kate Blankenship and Leah Bagonis flipped the loose ball to Malkiewicz for her 15th career goal. Bagonis was credited with her first assist of the year.
UAB tied the game at one when Laura McCalla scored on a long ball that was deflected by Amanda Broz in the box.
"I feel real bad for the team," said head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We played well enough to win this afternoon. Both teams had chances in the second half and overtime periods, but just couldn't get anything to fall. I'm disappointed that we let this game slip away."
Cordero logged seven saves in 110 minutes in goal, while Blankenship recorded five for the Blazers.
Malkiewicz led ECU with four shots, two on goal, while Bagonis recorded three (one on goal) and Kimmy Cummings added two (one on goal). McCalla and Carolyn Polcari each had three shots on goal for the Blazers.
ECU held a slim edge in shots, 14-12, and UAB had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-3.
The Pirates will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 15 when they travel to Houston before playing Rice on Oct. 17.
