ECU Takes Down Rice, 2-1

HOUSTON, Texas - Kimmy Cummings and Amanda Malkiewicz each scored goals to help East Carolina to a 2-1 victory over Rice in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium. The Pirates picked up their first win in four matches and improved to 8-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 in league play, while the Owls suffered their first loss in C-USA action falling to 5-1-2 and 8-6-2 on the season.
Cummings wasted little time in getting ECU on the board when she scored her third goal of the season just three minutes into match on a ball that was deflected off Rice keeper Catherine Fitzsimmons. Leah Bagonis was credited with her second assist of the year and seventh of her career.
Malkiewicz put the Pirates up 2-0 in the 52nd minute when she scored from the left side of the box after Hali Oughton served a pass that bounced behind the Rice defense for her team-leading sixth goal. For Malkiewicz it was 16th career goal and 48th career point, which moves her into a tie for fourth place with Kelly Gray on ECU's all-time points list.
In the 86th minute Rice finally scored cutting ECU's lead to 2-1. Kate Edwards headed in a free kick at the 85:26 mark for her fourth goal of the year. Hope Ward and Lauren LaGro were both credited with assists.
Christiane Cordero, who started her 15th-straight game in goal, pushed her season record to 8-7-1 after logging seven saves in 90 minutes of work. Fitzsimmons dropped to 2-2-2 and also recorded seven saves in the match.
Cummings led all players with five shots, three on goal, while Malkiewicz and Gratz each added two shots on goal for the Pirates. Edwards and Korey Taylor combined for half of Rice's shots on goal (8) each taking aim twice.
Rice held a commanding advantage in corner kicks, 9-2, and outshot the Pirates 17-13.
The Pirates will be back in action Friday, Oct. 22 when they play host to UTEP (7 p.m.) at the North Campus Recreation Complex. Friday night's match will also be the Second Annual Riley's Army Auction, while Sunday's (Oct. 24) game against Colorado College has been designated as Senior Day.
