CARY, N.C. - Senior Bailey Wilcox headed in the game winner in the 50th minute of play to lift East Carolina to a 2-1 victory over Tulsa in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon at the WakeMed Soccer Park. The match was moved from Greenville to Cary due to heavy rains earlier in the week and unplayable conditions at the North Campus Recreation Complex.
With the game knotted at one, Tricia Tufts started the game-winning score on a throw-in to Jessica Woodward, who placed a ball in the box where Wilcox headed the ball past keeper Katie Bykowski. For Wilcox it was her fourth goal of the year and second game-winning strike.
ECU (7-5-0, 2-2-0) got on the board first when Kimmy Cummings fired a shot from 27 yards out giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead at the 18:21 mark. After a Tulsa (5-7-0, 0-4-0) foul, Jessica Woodward flipped the ball back to Cummings, who netted her second goal of the year. Woodward finished with a pair of assists on the afternoon and pushed her season total to five, one behind Amanda Malkiewicz for the team lead.
Claire Nicholson tied the game at one when she sent a chip shot to the upper right corner of the goal from 29 yards out in the 47th minute of play for her seventh goal of the season.
Tulsa's Becky Handley received a pass from Brandi Hinch for what would have been the equalizer, but Hanley was called offside negating the goal at the 63:08 mark.
Christiane Cordero improved to 7-5 on the season after allowing one goal and logging five saves. Bykowski was credited with four saves in the match and fell to 5-7.
Wilcox led the Pirates with three shots, two on goal, while Handley led the Golden Hurricane with four shots (four on goal).
ECU held an 11-8 advantage on shots with both teams recording six shots on goal, while Tulsa had the edge in corners, 5-4.
The Pirates hit the road for their next four conference matches and will travel to Memphis on Friday, Oct. 8.
