GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina softball team resumes action at the Pirate Classic Saturday with a doubleheader against Towson and Morehead State beginning at 2:00 p.m.
Friday, the Pirates pounded out 15 hits and 13 runs batted in to defeat Delaware 15-1 in five innings. Junior Sissy Jimenez and freshman Cicely Lopez led the offense each driving in three runs. Lopez also picked up three hits and senior Cristen Aona scored four runs.
East Carolina Versus Towson ...
The Pirates have an all-time record of 11-1 against Towson with the teams meeting once a year in Greenville since 2005.
The only Pirate loss in series history occurred Feb. 23, 2007, when the Tigers won 1-0 via a third-inning unearned run. In that contest, Swann pitched a complete game and allowed just two hits, a single and a double.
Last year, ECU used four runs batted in from Sarah Bibee and three runs scored by Angel Barrella to cruise to a 9-2 victory. After trailing 1-0 through three innings, the Pirates outscored the Tigers 9-1 from the fourth inning on. Caitlin Wainright earned the win as she gave up two runs on four hits in four innings of work. Toni Paisley earned the save, going the final three frames and allowing only one hit.
Pirates Taking On The Eagles ...
East Carolina will meet Morehead State for the first time in program history Saturday afternoon.
The Eagles went 1-3 during their opening weekend, defeating Longwood 7-5 but falling to Fordham twice and Longwood once. Junior third baseman Rebecca Butler leads the team with a .308 batting average and four hits. In the circle, senior Sarah Funston went 1-1 while giving up nine runs, five earned, on 15 hits in 13 innings pitched.
ECU In First-Time Meetings ...
The Pirates' Saturday game against Morehead State will be the first in the series. Since 2006, East Carolina has gone 13-8 when playing a first-time opponent. In 2009, ECU went 2-0 in initial meetings, defeating Indiana 8-3 and Georgetown 9-0. This season, the tide has turned as the Pirates have fallen to Florida 4-3 and Kansas 3-1.
A Career Day ...
Sophomore first baseman Priscilla Velasquez started four of the five games at last weekend's Lipton Invitational. Friday against Marshall, she picked up a hit in her first at-bat, making it consecutive seasons in which she has gotten a hit in her initial trip to the plate. She also drove in the first run of her career against the Herd.
That afternoon, she scored her first run as a Pirate against Campbell. Defensively, her six putouts against Marshall established a career high.
Oh So Close ...
The East Carolina softball team played No. 3 Florida three times this season. Each time, the Gators came away with a one-run victory. In the season opener in Clearwater, Fla., Florida earned a 4-3 win. At last weekend's Lipton Invitational, the host Gators topped the Pirates 4-3 Saturday afternoon before capturing a 1-0 triumph Sunday. Pitching dominated the three matchups as Florida hit .206 as a team and the Pirates batted .178.
