Conference USA Indoor Championships Day One Results
HOUSTON, Texas - The East Carolina track and field teams put themselves in position to find the medals podium Friday in day one of the 2010 Conference USA Indoor Championships in Houston. The women currently sit in fifth-place while the men are in sixth.
The highlight of the day was junior Brittany Copeland setting a new school record and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships with a time of 16:31.34 in the 5,000-meter run. She would take third-place in the event.
The Pirates will have three representatives in the finals of the 60-meter dash on the men's side, as Austin Lewis, Isiah Gyasi and Antonial Marshall finished second, third and sixth in the prelims. Marshall will also run in the 200-meter dash finals after placing seventh in the prelims with a time of 22.30. Additionally, Ron Wright took eighth-place in the 400-meters, qualifying him for the finals tomorrow.
In the field events, freshman Drew Kanz reached 2.00 meters in the high jump to capture third-place and earn a medal. Lewis finished just out of the top three in the long jump, capturing fourth with a mark of 7.22 meters.
For the women, rookie Tiffany Harris finished seventh in the prelims of the 400-meter dash, completing the race in 56.97. The distance medley relay team fell just short of the podium, recording an 11.50.75 and finishing in fourth-place.
Stephanie McDougal showed well in the pole vault, garnering fourth-place honors with a mark of 3.55 meters while Kim Kanala picked up a fifth-place result in the weight throw at 17.13 meters.
