CONWAY, S.C. - In its first full outdoor meet of the season, the East Carolina track and field program produced a solid showing at the Coastal Carolina Shamrock Invitational at the Coastal Carolina Track this past weekend. Three school records were set by three newcomers on the men's side in the pole vault (Stephen Hodapp, 4.60m), shot put (Dennis Aliotta, 17.15m) and javelin (Matthew McConaughey, 68.01m) events.
In the very first event, the hammer throw, the Pirates recorded five top 10 finishes by Aliotta, Kenny Rowland, Daniel Varela, Maegan Lewis and Kim Kanala. Then, Nicole Tozzi picked up the event title in the javelin with a toss of 45.19 meters. On the men's side, McConaughey and Spencer Barrick finished in second and third-place while Sam Barnhardt checked in at 10th (57.05m).
Aliotta added to his success in the discus, throwing 45.18 meters which was good for seventh-place. Kanala also showed well in the event, registering a mark of 43.85 meters. In the shot put, adding to Aliotta's school-record mark, Rowland recorded a 16.24 to take fourth-place while Aaron Zakula fell just behind Hodapp's mark in the pole vault as he tied for eighth (4.45m).
Rounding out the field events, Austin Lewis and Tiffany Harris captured seventh and 10th-place, respectively, while Drew Kanz and Valeria Moore were second and fourth in the high jump to complement Camelia Morman and Miles Coats' second and seventh place results in the triple jump.
In the 3,000-meter run, Antoine Berlin ran an 8:55.47 - good for fourth-place, while Zachary Montijo and Grant Burress were seventh and eighth. Antonial Marshall, Isiah Gyasi, Mario Briscoe and Lewis teamed up to grab fourth in the 4x100 relay with a time of 41.14 before Briscoe snatched up ninth in the 110-meter hurdles, clocking in at 14.87. He then bettered that placement in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing sixth with a time of 54.28.
The 4x400-meter group of Briscoe, Ron Wright, Marshall and Antonio Palmer secured 10th by completing the race in 3:20.51 before the 4x800 and 4x200 teams were seventh and eighth to close the proceedings.
East Carolina returns to action at the Raleigh Relays, scheduled for March 26-27 at the Paul Derr Track on the campus of N.C. State.
