CHARLESTON, S.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis squad used a doubles sweep and wins in five of six singles matches to hand Division III Case Western Reserve a 6-1 non-conference setback Saturday afternoon at the Earle Tennis Center.
ECU pushed its spring season record to 10-2 while the CWRU dropped to 4-8.
After the Pirates' tandem of Jaroslav Horvath and Stephen Whitwell opened doubles play with an 8-1 defeat of Richard Brunsting and John Smetona at the No. 1 slot, East Carolina clinched the doubles point when Henrik Skalmerud and John Schmitt followed with an 8-1 victory over Kyle Gerber and Nicolas Howe at No. 3. The Spartan’s Rohan Patel and Alex Solove gave the Pirates' No. 2 pair, Massimo Mannino and Bryan Oakley, a battle before falling 8-6.
In singles play, ECU would take five of six matches all decided in straight sets. Oakley and Horvath pushed East Carolina's lead to 3-0 with victories at the No. 5 and No. 2 positions, respectively, as Oakley blanked Brunsting (6-0, 6-0) and Horvath rolled past Gerber (6-0, 6-1).
