
Tennis Comes Up Short At College of Charleston

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Tom Delme and Lukas Koncilia clinched the doubles point with their 9-8 tiebreak victory over Jaroslav Horvath and Stephen Whitwell in a No. 1 match that proved to be the difference as College of Charleston edged East Carolina 4-3 in non-conference men's tennis action Monday afternoon at The CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point.
The Pirates fell to 10-3 on the year while the Cougars improved to 6-2. Mickael Boyer and Mickael Trintignac opened doubles play with an 8-0 win over Henrik Skalmerud and John Schmitt at the No. 3 slot. ECU bounced back with a 9-7 victory by Bryan Oakley and Massimo Mannino over Billy Kenny and Steven Myers to split doubles action at 1-1. Despite the effort by Horvath and Whitwell, Delme and Konchilia would take the match and put College of Charleston up 1-0.
ECU and CofC would split singles play, all six matches were decided in straight sets. College of Charleston used wins by Trintignac over Whitwell (6-0, 6-2) at No. 2, Delme over Skalmerud (6-3, 6-2) at No. 3 and by Konchilia over Horvath (6-3, 6-1) at No. 1 to capture the match point.
East Carolina's picked up victories at the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 positions as Mannino defeated Joe Nicolazzi (6-3, 6-2) at the No. 4 flight while Schmitt handled John Harden (6-0, 6-1) at the No. 5 position and Oakley posted a 6-1, 6-3 score over Chris Toussaint in the No. 6 match up.
The Pirates will take a day off before taking on The Citadel for a 2 p.m. on match on Wednesday, March 10.
