PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The East Carolina track and field program made its mark on the 116th running of the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field, winning three event titles while also setting three school records. Tynita Butts (Eastern long jump), Dennis Aliotta (College shot put) and Spencer Barrick (College javelin) each finished first in their respective events while Butts, Aliotta and Brittany Copeland (Championship 5,000m run) produced new school standards.
For the men, Mario Briscoe ended up fourth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.80. Adding another top 10 finish, Austin Lewis took ninth in the long jump (college division) at 7.10 meters. Barrick's 65.39 meter-effort in the college division also netted him first in the javelin while Matthew McConaughey snatched sixth in the championship division of the same event with a mark of 62.05 meters.
The 4x200 relay team just missed out on advancing to the championship finals, running a time of 1:26.26 to finish 19th. It did, however, qualify for the ICAAAA final and improved its time to 1:25.55 which was good for third.
A time of 46.21 by the women's 4x100 relay team was the sixth-place time in the ICAAAA final after it was 30th in the heats at 46.44. Copeland then broke the 16-year old record in the 5000-meter run after clocking in at 16:25.95.
