
Softball Goes For Sweep Of UCF

Orlando, Fla. - After a pair of 2-0 victories over UCF Saturday, the East Carolina softball team goes for the three-game Conference USA series sweep Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
No Runs Here …
After Friday’s pair of 2-0 victories, the Knights have not scored a run against the ECU pitching staff in the past five games. The Pirates have won two 3-0 games, two 2-0 games and a 5-0 contest.
A Good One And Three Punch ...
Entering this weekend’s action, senior Marina Gusman-Brown and classmate Charina Sumner have hit either first or third in the lineup for the majority of the 2010 season. The duo has been extremely effective, combining for 63 hits, 41 runs scored, 32 RBI and 23 stolen bases. Those numbers account for more than 26 percent of the team’s total in each category, with the stolen bases being a whopping 59.0 percent of ECU’s steals.
I’m Coming Back, Part I ...
Entering last weekend’s series against Marshall, ECU had an 0-9 record when trailing after the fourth or fifth inning and was 0-10 when behind after six. However, in Saturday’s first game, the Pirates were behind 3-1 entering the bottom of the seventh but came back to claim a 4-3 victory in nine innings. Gusman-Brown’s two-out, two-run home run in the seventh knotted the score at 3-3 and set the stage for senior Kaui Tom’s game-winning sacrifice fly.
I’m Coming Back, Part II ...
The Pirates pulled off another comeback in game two against UNC Greensboro Tuesday evening. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a solo home run by Eileen Horsmon. East Carolina scored four-straight runs in the third and fourth and went on to win 6-3. It was the first time this season the Pirates recorded a victory when the opponent had scored first.
Hits All Around ...
Entering last week, the Pirate offense was batting .239, good for seventh in C-USA. After playing the five games, ECU saw its batting average jump up to .269 and into third in the league.
Leaders In Conference USA ...
A look at the league leaders heading into this week’s games shows the Pirates leading C-USA in fielding percentage at .974 and hit by pitches with 23. ECU is also tied for the top spot in sacrifice flies with eight.
Individually, Gusman-Brown’s three sacrifice flies are the most in the conference.
