Butts Sets School Record In Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Newcomer Tynita Butts broke her own school record in the high jump to lead the East Carolina track and field program in the second-annual Mountains vs. Beaches Challenge, held at the Greene Track and Field Complex on the campus of UNC Wilmington. The Mountains won the event for the second time while Western Carolina won both the men's and the women's team titles. The Pirate women finished second while the men took fourth.
Tiffany Harris was third in both of her events, running a 25.01 in the 200-meter dash while clocking in at 56.34 in the 400-meter race. Brooke Kott and Samantha Lichtner then picked up the first two event titles for ECU in the 800-meters and 1,500-meters with times of 2:14.34 and 4:38.98 respectively. Additionally, Amanda Lapp produced a second-place finish in the 1,500, checking in at 4:40.06.
Tara Wilson captured third in the 3,000-meter run at 10:10.50 before Nicole Saunders collected second and third-place results in the 400 and 100-meter hurdles with times of 1:04.13 and 14.65. The women's 4x400 relay team of Britney Kott, Brooke Kott, Harris and Saunders turned in a second-place showing, finishing the event in 3:51.81 - a season-best time.
Fresh off of her Conference USA Freshman-of-the-Year honor in the indoor season, Tynita Butts experienced her first action in the outdoor circuit, breezing by the competition to take first-place in the high jump with the school-record mark of 1.75 meters. Abbey Way then pulled in the event title in the pole vault, recording a mark of 3.70 meters to smash her previous high of 3.35. Butts was not finished, as she cleared 5.90 meters in the long jump to garner her second event title of the afternoon.
Camelia Morman set an outdoor season-high in the triple jump, finishing second at 12.23 meters. Kim Kanala then yet another event championship for her team in the discus, beating out her season-best mark by registering a throw of 43.93 meters. The hammer throw placed Pirate athletes in the top four spots, led by 2009 C-USA Outdoor event champion Maegan Lewis' 56.21 meter toss. Donisha Brown (53.37), Kanala (51.75) and Ashleigh Lee (50.14) rounded out the rest of the top four. Nicole Tozzi completed the ladies' participation on a high note, snatching first-place in the javelin with a mark of 45.16 meters.
Ron Wright and Antonio Palmer kicked off the men's portion of the meet by taking a pair of fourth-place finishes in the 400 and 800-meter events with times of 48.31 and 1:54.40. Dillon Hawley then captured fifth in the 3,000-meter run at 8:50.57. Mario Briscoe excelled in the hurdles, picking up second-place in both the 110 (14.53) and 400-meter (53.49).
In the high jump, Drew Kanz was third at an even 2.00 meters while Aaron Zakula ended up fourth in the pole vault with a mark of 4.60 meters. Austin Lewis also collected fourth in the long jump at 6.73 meters. Dennis Aliotta continued his strong campaign, winning the shot put and hammer throw with marks of 16.23 and 57.17 meters. McConaughey then teamed up with Spencer Barrick to place first and third in the javelin, producing throws and 66.16 and 62.41. McCounaughey's mark is currently the top in C-USA.
The Pirates continue their season next weekend, traveling to Athens, Ga. for the Georgia Invitational. The meet is scheduled for April 9-10 at the Spec Towns Track.
