IRVING, Texas - For the second-straight week and fourth time in the past six, East Carolina junior Toni Paisley was named the Conference USA Pitcher-of-the-Week according to an announcement Monday by league officials. Paisley led East Carolina to a 5-0 week as she won all five games. The weekly honor is the 12th of the Lakewood, Calif., native's career.
Over the five contests, Paisley allowed only two earned runs in 28.1 innings, good for a 0.49 earned run average. She also struck out 37 batters and issued five walks. Over her past 10 decisions, all victories, she has allowed just five earned runs.
Against UNC Greensboro Tuesday, Paisley gave up her only runs of the week as she surrendered a solo home run in each game of the doubleheader. In the first contest she struck out 12, marking the third time in her past five starts she reached double-digit whiffs. The Tuesday wins put her in sole possession of seventh on the Conference USA all-time list with 66.
In Saturday's opener at UCF, Paisley surrendered just three hits, all in the fifth inning or later, two walks and struck out seven in the 29th shutout of her career. She came in for the final three-and-a-third innings of the second contest and allowed three hits and a walk in the extra-inning triumph. In Sunday's finale, Paisley earned the 30th shutout and 69th victory of her career after giving up five hits and two walks while striking out a series-high eight batters. Paisley's performance helped the Pirates shut out the Knights in all three games of the series for the second-straight season.
The Pirates (20-12, 5-1 C-USA) return to action Wednesday with a nonconference doubleheader at Hampton (14-21). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
