GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshman Matthew McConaughey became the second Pirate to advance to the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships, throwing 67.11 meters to take 10th in the javelin throw at the East Regional at Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T.
McConaughey joins Tynita Butts, who advanced in the long and high jump events yesterday.
Three women competed in the hammer throw, with Maegan Lewis, Kim Kanala and Donisha Brown recording marks of 53.23 (27th), 52.69 (30th) and 48.58 (43rd) meters, respectively.
Wrapping up the field events for Friday, Dennis Aliotta recorded a 31st-place finish in the shot put (16.97 meters), Drew Kanz O'Shea tied for 33rd in the high jump (2.01 meters) and Spencer Barrick garnered 21st-place in the javelin at 63.10 meters.
As for the Pirates' lone track entrant of the day, Randy Bolton finshed seventh in his heat in the 110-meter high hurdles, falling short of qualifying for the quarterfinals.
ECU will have two more chances to book a place in the national meet on the last day of regionals tomorrow, as Camelia Morman competes in the triple jump and Brittany Copeland participates in the 5000-meter run.
