GREENVILLE, N.C. - Four different Pirates scored goals as East Carolina picked up its first win of the 2010 season Sunday afternoon, 4-1, against Francis Marion at the North Campus Recreation Complex in a lightning shorten game. The win pushed the Pirates' (1-1) even on the year, while the Patriots dropped to 0-2.
From the outset the Pirates' seemed to be in control recording 15 of their 21 shots in the first 45-minutes of play and taking a commanding 3-1 lead at the intermission. Amanda Malkiewicz scored the first goal of the match on a penalty kick in the 20th minute for her first goal of the year and 11th of her career.
Less than two minutes later, the Patriots tied the game at one on a header by Michelle Brown headed in the 21st minute. Rebecca Nelson set up the equalizer on a free kick from just outside the box, where Brown found the back of the net on a header.
"I'm happy that we were able to score four goals," said Head Coach Rob Donnenwirth. "I felt like we were pretty in control of the game, but was disappointed on the goal we gave up on the free kick and not tracking runners. But overall I thought we controlled the pace of the game and had some good goals."
Chrissy Gratz netted the would-be game-winner at the 37:54 mark on an open net goal in the first half, giving the Pirates a 2-1 advantage. Francis Marion keeper Casey Durham misplayed a cross pass in the box and Gratz was there to record her first career game-winning goal.
ECU added its third goal of the first stanza two minutes later (39:53) when Jessica Cunningham found Caty Butler open on the left side. Butler received the pass and placed a 35-yard chip shot in the upper right corner for her first goal of the year and third of her career, staking the Pirates to a 3-1 lead.
Bailey Wilcox got into the scoring action in the second period, 68th minute, when she headed a pass from Amanda Windsor in the upper corner of the goal extending ECU's lead to 4-1. For Wilcox it was her 12th career goal and Windsor recorded her first career assist.
Play was halted in the 79th minute due to lightning in the area and after an 18-minute delay, the officials called the game because of a second lightning strike.
Pirate keeper Christiane Cordero notched her first career win allowing one goal and logging four saves. Durham stopped nine of ECU's 13 shots on goal and suffered her second-straight defeat in goal.
Gratz lead all players with five shots, while Wilcox posted a game-high three shots on goal.
FMU held the advantage in corner kicks, 6-3.
ECU returns to the pitch Friday night, Aug. 27 (7 p.m.) when they play host to 10th-ranked Wake Forest at the North Campus Recreation Complex.
