GREENVILLE, N.C. --- The East Carolina soccer team held its first intrasquad scrimmage of the preseason under the lights at the North Recreational Complex Monday. Junior Kimmy Cummings scored two goals to lead her squad to a shutout victory, 2-0.
"I thought the scrimmage was good tonight, but you could tell there were some heavy legs," said 12th-year head coach Rob Donnenwirth. "We had a few unforced errors, but overall I thought it was good and I thought the energy level was good. It's usually around this time where you see them walking at times, but they are still going at it."
Monday marked the fifth day of the preseason camp, which began on Thursday at North Recreational Complex. The Pirates will conduct their entire preseason camp at the off-campus facility and are scheduled to play their first three games at NRC.
The game was scoreless after one period and remained that way until midway through the second period when Cummings got behind the defense and took a pass from junior Amanda Windsor at midfield and sent it into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Cummings scored her second goal of the night in the final minute of the third period, firing a deflected pass into the far corner of the goal.
"It's fun to come out here and see them get better," Donnenwirth said. "I'm just excited to see everybody improve. We've got some injuries we are dealing, but the young players are learning. For the rest of the team, the chemistry is good and I really like the attitudes."
Sophomore Christiane Cordero and freshman Jessy Young each played every minute in goal and with returning starting goalie Berit Hansen sidelined with an injury, Cordero has emerged as the leading candidate to start in goal.
"Christiane knew coming in that Berit was injured and may or may not be back this season. She really took that to heart and has been playing very well in goal," Donnenwirth explained. "Jessy was injured and was only cleared to practice about a week before preseason camp began and she is still trying to get her timing and fitness down. Both of them have worked really hard."
The Pirates will continue preseason camp this week in anticipation for their only exhibition game vs. VCU in Richmond on Fri., Aug. 13 at 7 p.m.
