GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's soccer team will travel to in-state rival and former Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) foe UNC Wilmington Thursday night before heading to William & Mary on Sunday, Sept. 19.
The Pirates (4-2-0) will look to extend its current win streak to four games - the longest streak since winning four in a row back in 2007 - when they face the Seahawks (2-4-0). Thursday's contest marks the 16th meeting between the Seahawks and the Pirates as the two teams have met in all but one of the Seahawks 17 seasons of competition (2004). ECU has won three straight in the series, with UNCW's last win coming in a 2-1 victory in Greenville during the 2006 campaign. Each of the past two meetings, including last season's matchup that saw the Pirates record a 4-3 double-overtime in Greenville.
In their last outing, the Pirates topped in-state rival N.C. State, 1-0, in Greenville when Chrissy Gratz netted her third game-winning goal of the season in the 62nd minute off a center pass from Amanda Malkiewicz. Gratz leads the team with seven points (3G, 1 A), while Malkiewicz is second with six points (2G, 2 A). Sophomore keeper Christiane Cordero has started all six matches in goal and has posted a 1.36 goals against average with 26 saves, highlighted by a season-high 11 stops in the 1-0 victory against the Wolfpack.
UNCW will look to bounce back after suffering a 2-1 double-overtime setback to Charlotte on Sept. 12. The Seahawks were out-shot by the 49ers, 22-16, in the contest but held a 12-4 advantage in corner kicks taken. Sophomore Stephanie Rose found the back of the net for the third straight contest to increase her team-leading point total to nine (3 G, 3 A). Sophomore Sara Kneeland was credited with an assist on Rose's strike to move into sole possession of second place on the team's scoring chart with seven points (2 G, 3 A). Junior keeper Chandler Follett matched her season high with eight saves in the losing effort.
The Pirates will continue their four-game road trip next week when they start Conference USA play against UCF (Sept. 24) and Southern Miss (Sept. 26). ECU's next home matches will be on Friday, Oct. 1 against SMU and Sunday, Oct. 3, which have been designated as Parent's Weekend.
