ECU Opens Final Home Stand Against Rice Friday Night

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina soccer team will open its final four game home stand of the season Friday, Oct. 21 when it welcomes in Rice for a 7 p.m. (ET) tilt. Friday's game has been designated as faculty/staff night allowing them and their families to be admitted free.
The Pirates (7-6-1, 2-5-0) are coming off a split weekend where they recorded their fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 victory over SMU on Sunday. Senior Amanda Malkiewicz netted the lone goal, her fourth of the season, in overtime with three seconds remaining to give the Pirates their second league win of the season. On Friday night, ECU suffered a 1-0 setback to Tulsa and posted just three shots on goal. With her goal, Malkiewicz moved into a tie for fourth place on the school's all-time goals list (21) with Kelly Gray (1998-01).
With four games remaining, Caty Butler has a chance to cap off one of the best single-season performances ever in school history. The Boerne, Texas native leads the team and is ranked third in C-USA action in goals (7) and points (17). Fellow upperclassmen Kimmy Cummings also ranks among the league leaders in goals (6/t-6th) and points (15/t-7th), while Leah Bagonis is tied for second in assists (6).
In goal, sophomore keeper Christiane Cordero picked up her fourth shutout of the season (sixth career) stopping four shots and playing all 100 minutes in goal. On the season she has allowed 19 goals in 14 starts, and has posted a 1.36 goals against average with a .736 save percentage. Nine of her 53 saves came against No. 21 William & Mary, a season-high for the Valencia, Calif. native.
Rice enters the contest with a 9-5-2 overall record and a 4-3-1 mark in league action. Ten players have scored at least one goal this season, including eight by Jessica Howard and three by Alex Burton, while Quinney Truong leads the club with three assists. Amy Czyz has been sound-and-solid in 16 starts this season. So far the Rice rookie keeper has maintained an .804 save percentage and an 0.62 goals-against average. Czyz' goals-against average is ranked 24th among the current NCAA leaders. The California native is one of only three freshmen in the nation's Top 25 for goals-against average.

Back on Oct. 9, the Pirates played their fourth nationally ranked team of the season (all at home) when they fell to No. 24 UCF, 2-0, at the ECU Soccer Stadium. Bulter Having Magical Year
With four games remaining in the 2011 season, junior Caty Butler is hoping to put the finishing touches on one of the best single-season performances in school history. The Boerne, Texas native leads the team in goals (7), points (17) and is tied for second in assists (3). Butler, who ranks among the national leaders in assists per game (0.5/92nd) and points per game (1.21/110th), earned C-USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week honors (8/29) after scoring both goals against UNCW, 2-0, in the new ECU Soccer Stadium. Bagonis Is Among C-USA's Best
Senior forward Leah Bagonis has dished out a team-best six assists so far this season, which is tied for second in Conference USA. The Wallingford, Pa. native also stands 69th nationally in assists per game (0.43 apg) and is one shy of moving into a tie for fifth place on the school's single-season charts.

Cummings Record Hat Trick
Kimmy Cummings recorded her first career hat trick at Old Dominion (8/21) helping East Carolina to a 4-1 win. With the score knotted at one, Cummings received a through ball from freshman Beth Batchelor in the 41st minute breaking the tie and netting her first career game-winning goal.
In the 66th minute, Cummings was all alone on the right side of the field and booted a ball past the Monarch keeper for a 3-1 lead. Just six minutes later, the senior forward capped off the magical afternoon with her third goal sending a shot to the right of the box past the keeper on another through ball, this time from fellow classmate Amanda Malkiewicz. For Cummings it was her second career multi-goal game and the first ECU hat trick since Meghan McCallion netted three goals against DePaul on Oct. 1, 2004.
Butler Named C-USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week
Caty Butler picked up her first career C-USA weekly honor on Aug. 29 after she helped the Pirates to a 2-0 win over instate rival UNC Wilmington on Aug. 25. The junior netted both goals marking her first career multi-goal game of her career. In the 10th minute she received a through ball from senior Leah Bagonis and scored from 21 yards out staking the Pirates to an early 1-0 lead, her third career game-winning goal. In the 61st minute she sealed the victory with another through ball from Bagonis and beat the Seahawk keeper one-on-one for her second strike of the night.
First Career Starts
Three true freshmen have recorded their first collegiate starts during the 2011 season ... Mackenzie Semerad was the first in the season opener against No. 21 South Carolina ... During the Pirates final road trip, Kelley Johnson started against Tulsa logging 50 minutes as a defender ... In the final game of the road trip at SMU, she played 92 minutes in her second start ... Lexi Miller notched her first start as a Pirate at SMU at one of the midfield spots playing 23 minutes.

Senior Amanda Malkiewicz was named to the All C-USA preseason team a voted on by the league's 12 head coaches on Aug. 9 ... Malkiewicz, who was a third-team All C-USA selection in 2010, started all 19 games for the Pirates and became the fifth player in school history to lead the squad in goals (7), assists (6) and points (20) in the same season.
