GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's golf team is set to host the 2011 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C. on Oct. 10-11 at the par-72, 6,056-yard Greenville Country Club.
The Pirates, who have finished second the last three years, are joined in the 20-team field by Bucknell, No. 79 College of Charleston, No. 86 East Tenn. State, Elon, No. 89 Furman, No. 55 Georgia State, Georgetown, High Point, No. 62 James Madison, No. 71 Longwood, Memphis, No. 92 Maryland, UNC Greensboro, No. 93 UNC Wilmington, Old Dominion, Pennsylvania, Western Carolina, William & Mary and Yale.
Five of the top-six performers from last year's event are back including 2010 medalist Christine Shimel, who helped Maryland to the team title a year ago. Also returning are Jessie Hollandsworth (Maryland), Samantha Morrell (ODU), Marissa Steen (Memphis) and Fanny Wolte (East Carolina), all of which finished tied for third place.
Since the event began in 2000, the Pirates have claimed three titles (2000-02), finished second four times (2003, 2008-10) and third once (2004).
ECU's Fanny Wolte and Julia Strandberg will begin play on the first hole, while Katie Kirk will start from the second tee, Amy Otteson on the third hole and Faith Hardison on the fourth tee. True freshmen Emily Eng and Devan Murphy will start from the 18th hole.
The two-day 54-hole event will have 36-holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. on both days. Pirate fans can catch all the live action by logging onto www.Golfstat.com or www.ECUPirates.com.
