Butts Wins Conference USA High Jump Title

HOUSTON, Texas - East Carolina Sophomore All-America jumper Tynita Butts turned in a mark of 1.83 meters to capture her first career Conference USA indoor high jump title Friday at the C-USA Indoor Championships. She is already qualified to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships next month.
Butts also picked up another medal during day one, taking the silver in the long jump with a mark of 6.12 meters.
The women are in third place as a team with 28 points while the men sit sixth at 14 points.
Montrell Morrow produced a solid performance, registering a lifetime personal record of 18.10 meters to take the bronze medal in the weight throw. The 5000-meter run was also completed Friday with Brittany Copeland taking third-place with a time of 16:54.20.
Two Pirates were fifth and scored for the squad in their respective events as Austin Lewis recorded 7.39 in the long jump and Kim Kanala threw 17.42 in the weight throw. Lewis has another chance for a conference title tomorrow, qualifying eighth in the prelims of the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.30.
Many preliminaries took place on the first day as well with numerous ECU athletes qualifying for the finals tomorrow. In the 800-meter run, Antonio Palmer clocked in at 1:55.09 to take sixth while Brooke and Britney Kott were fifth and eighth with times of 2:14.43 and 2:14.89 in the same event.
Lewis and Isiah Gyasi moved on in the 60-meter dash, checking in at 6.85 and 6.87. Freshman Taylor Sykes opened his collegiate conference championship experience by taking eighth and qualifying in the 400-meter prelims with a time of 50.19. The ladies will have a pair of representatives in 400 as Aiesha Goggins and Tiffany Harris were second and sixth - finishing in 55.19 and 56.63.
A trio of Pirates qualified in the 60-meter high hurdles with Randy Bolton (8.23), Joseph Samuels (8.32) and Mario Briscoe (8.39) moving on to tomorrow's final. On the women's side, Erin Tucker will also race in tomorrow's women's 60-meter hurdle final, finishing sixth in the prelims with a time of 8.66.
ECU will close out the C-USA Indoor Championships tomorrow at the Yeoman Fieldhouse with action getting underway in the field events at 2 p.m. ET.
