NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The East Carolina track and field program continued its successful campaign last weekend at the University of Notre Dame's Alex Wilson Invitational inside the Loftus Field House. Only three ECU athletes competed, but they made the most of the trip with some of the top performances in program history. Seniors Brittany Copeland and Jordan Neil established records in their respective 3,000-meter races while freshman Aiesha Goggins finished the 400-meter event with the second-best time in the Pirate record book.
Copeland completed her 3,000-meter event in fourth place overall with a time of 9:27.78. The Stafford, Va., native broke her own school record by nearly nine seconds as her previous best was a 9:36.01 performance at the 2010 UNC Invitational.
Neil was nearly as impressive, clocking out with a time of 7:59.11 in the 3,000 meters. Like Copeland, Neil also placed fourth overall, trailing a runner from Navy, Virginia Tech and Princeton. Neil also shattered his own school record of 8:14.24, set at the Penn State Penn State Sykes-Sabock Cup Feb. 5. The Bangor, Northern Ireland, product's time was less than one second shy off an NCAA automatic-qualifying performance.
Rounding out the trio's impressive performance was Goggins, who checked in third overall in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.98 seconds. The mark was only .58 seconds off the NCAA provisional-qualifying time standard. A Durham, N.C., native, Goggins was .18 seconds shy of the school record she set during the Penn State Penn State Sykes-Sabock Cup Feb. 5.
Sophomore All-America high jumper Tynita Butts will travel to the NCAA Indoor Championships March 11-12 in College Station, Texas, before the outdoor season begins March 18 with the Wake Forest Open.
