CLINTON, S.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team posted its sixth victory in its last seven matches and pushed its early spring season record to 10-3 by posting five singles wins and a doubles sweep on the way to a 6-1 non-conference triumph over Presbyterian Saturday.
The Pirates posted straight set victories in all five of their singles matches. Second-seeded Jaroslav Horvath recorded the first win with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Andrew Brigham, while Joran Vliegen followed with a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Rafael Berghaus at the No. 3 position.
Henrik Skalmerud tallied the Pirates' third singles tally by putting together a 6-4, 6-2 win over Kenneth Moody at No. 4 before John Schmitt and Stian Tvedt added 6-1, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-3 victories against Gonzalo Asis and Zach Sprouse at the No. 5 and No. 6 slots, respectively, to complete East Carolina's scoring efforts.
Presbyterian earned its only win of the match when Grayson Mills outlasted ECU's Massimo Mannino 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 in a No. 1 meeting.
East Carolina enjoyed a strong start, sweeping doubles play to garner the opening point. An 8-2 victory by Horvath and Vliegen at the No. 1 position over Presbyterian's Berghaus and Brigham was followed by an 8-1 win by the tandem of Skalmerud and Tvedt over Asis and Nathan Crocker at No. 2 to secure the tally. In addition, Mannino and Nathan Smiley defeated Sprouse and Mills 8-3 in a No. 3 matchup.
