ECU Wins Four Titles At Wake Forest

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - East Carolina opened its outdoor season in earnest this weekend in Winston-Salem, winning four event titles at the Wake Forest Open.
Freshman Kathryn Warner took the title in pole vault B pit, registering a mark of 3.20 meters. The other three were taken by the men with Austin Lewis winning the long jump at 7.13 meters, Montrell Morrow capturing the hammer throw (58.87) and the 4x100 relay team taking its event in 41.03.
Erin Tucker and Tyshonda Hawkins scored fourth and 10th-place finishes in the 100-meter dash with times of 12.03 and 12.40, respectively, while Aiesha Goggins and Hawkins were second and ninth in the 200-meters - clocking in at 24.16 and 24.82. Amanda Lapp also produced a top 10 finish in the 3000-meter run (second) with a time of 10:11.65.
In the hurdles, Erin Tucker was ninth in the 100m at 14.90 and Victoria Robinson finished eighth in the 400m, checking in at 1:02.83. Additionally, the 4x100 relay team was third with a time of 46.69.
In the field, Abbey Way was second in the pole vault at 3.60 meters while Katherine Gray was sixth, registering 3.05 meters. Nicole Tozzi also turned in a top three finish in the javelin, taking third at 45.45 meters. In the hammer, ECU had four athletes in the top 10, highlighted by Maegan Lewis (second/57.09) and Kim Kanala (third/53.15). Donisha Brown and Ashleigh rounded out the group at fourth and 10th-place (52.61 and 45.43).
For the men, Mario Briscoe was in the top 10 in two track events - the 200 meters (21.39) and 400-meters (48.53). In the 110-meter hurdles, the Pirates had two top 10 finishers in Joseph Samuels (fifth/15.07) and Randy Bolton (eighth/15.15).
Aaron Zakula, the current school record holder in the pole vault, finished fifth with a mark of 4.60 meters while newcomer Henry Johnson took eighth at 4.45 meters.
Defending Conference USA shot put champion Dennis Aliotta turned in a third-place result this weekend, checking in at 17.09 meters, followed by Kenneth Rowland in seventh (16.43). Aliotta also took second in the hammer throw with a mark of 58.74. Additionally, Matthew McConaughey, who qualified for last year's NCAA Outdoor Championships in the javelin, was fourth at 63.98 meters.
East Carolina continues its outdoor campaign next weekend at the Raleigh Relays, slated for March 25-26 on the campus of N.C. State.
