
Relay Teams Shine In Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. - Two school-record performances and three top-10 finishes from the relay teams highlighted East Carolina's participation in the Raleigh Relays this weekend at the Paul Derr Track.
The women's 4x200 relay team, consisting of Tania Minkins, Tyshonda Hawkins, Tiffany Harris and Aiesha Goggins, ran a program-record time of 1:35.91 to break the old standard by almost three seconds and finish second. The ladies' 4x800 squad turned in an additional top-10 result, taking ninth and clocking in at 9:29.79. The Sprint Medley group was also solid, capturing second place in 3:55.30.
In the field, sophomore All-America Tynita Butts captured her fifth event title of the overall season, falling .01 meters shy of her school record set at the NCAA Regionals last season. She would jump 1.80 meters Saturday.
Abbey Way produced her second-highest mark of the outdoor season in the pole vault, checking in at 3.50 meters to grab third place while rookie Erica Bell was eighth in the triple jump with a mark of 10.82 meters. Ashleigh Lee was also in the top 10 among Pirate field athletes, taking 10th in the hammer with a heave of 46.92 meters.
A few of the men also had strong showings, as Randy Bolton ended up 10th in the 110-meter hurdles events with a time of 14.72. Sophomore Cory Hampshire also took 10th in his section of the 5000-meter run, clocking in at 15:20.84.
After finishing with the seventh-best overall time in the prelims of the 100-meter dash, Austin Lewis ended the day 12th in the finals with a time of 11.04.
ECU travels to Gainesville, Fla., next weekend for the Pepsi Florida Relays. The meets is scheduled for April 1-2 at the Percy Beard Track.
