ECU Men's Tennis Tops Coastal Carolina, 4-3

CONWAY, S.C. - East Carolina's top-seeded doubles tandem of Jaroslav Horvath and Joran Vliegen captured an 8-5 win to clinch a pivotal doubles point and lift the Pirates to a 4-3 non-conference victory over Coastal Carolina Tuesday afternoon at the Billy Nichols Tennis Center.

The triumph was the Pirates' fifth in their last six matches and improved their overall spring ledger to 9-3. The Chanticleers lost their third straight and fell to 6-3 overall.

After the ECU tandem of Henrik Skalmerud and Stian Tvedt were beaten at the No. 2 doubles position, ECU stormed back to win at No. 3 and No. 1 to claim the doubles point.

In addition to Horvath and Vliegen's win over Matt Gordon and Peter Bilingham, Massimo Mannino teamed with Nathan Smiley to knock off Coastal's Doran Sovic and Yusuke Kusuda, 8-3.

The Pirates and Chanticleers split six singles events as ECU captured the first, fourth and fifth-flight matchups. After Mannino and Vliegen tallied straight-set 6-3, 6-4 and 6-0, 7-5 wins over Danny Heidecker and Sovic at No. 1 and No. 4, respectively, John Schmitt secured the Pirates' team victory by bouncing back from a first-set defeat to rally past Billingham 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

East Carolina will return action Thursday when it faces off against James Madison in Conway, S.C. in match scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m.
