IRVING, Texas - Senior distance runner Jordan Neil, after running the nation's second-fastest 1,500-meter time at the Florida Relays, has been named Conference USA Male Outdoor Athlete-of-the-Week, according to an announcement by league officials Tuesday.
The selection marks the first career weekly honor for the Northern Ireland native and first for the program since Eric Frasure's accolade Feb. 6, 2007.
Neil's 3:43.43 time in the event allowed him to capture a second-place finish and set the program record. The previous standard was held by Bill Miller, who produced a time of 3:46.40 in 1980. Additionally, Neil is the owner of the ECU indoor 3,000-meter record.
The senior currently ranks first on the C-USA outdoor performance chart and is less than one second behind the nation's leader Isaac Presson of North Carolina. Neil's time was also nearly two seconds faster than Florida Relays third-place finisher Danny Neff from Georgia.
Neil and the Pirates continue their outdoor campaign this Saturday, April 9, with a quad meet in Cullowhee, N.C. East Carolina will team up with UNC Wilmington and compete against Appalachian State and host Western Carolina. Individual team scores will also be kept in order to determine an overall winner.
