Track Excels At C-USA Outdoor Championships

HOUSTON, Texas - East Carolina took four of the top eight spots in the women's hammer throw to highlight the Pirates' day one participation at the 2011 Conference USA Outdoor Championships at Holloway Track/Ley Field.
The women sit in second place with 22 points, six behind UTEP, while the men are in third with 14 - six behind second-place Tulsa.
Maegan Lews, who won the previous two league titles in the hammer, finished second this season with her highest mark of the campaign at 57.55 meters. Kim Kanala captured fourth while Donisha Brown and Ashley Clasen rounded out the top eight with marks of 54.58, 52.74 and 52.34 meters, respectively. Ashleigh Lee finished just out of the scoring in ninth as she threw 50.95 meters.
The men also competed in the hammer Friday, as Dennis Aliotta and Montrell Morrow took third and fourth with marks of 60.14 and 57.09 meters to capture 11 points for the squad. Daniel Varela also scored for the Pirates, finishing in sixth with a throw of 54.95.
The 10,000-meter run was also contested Friday night, as Tara Wilson Bjork Olsen were fifth and seventh with respective times of 37:40.19 and 38:10.96 to keep the women near the top of the leaderboard.
The meet begins in earnest tomorrow as a number of Pirates will take aim at league titles. A variety of field events begin at 5 p.m. while prelims in the sprints and hurdles get underway an hour later.
