Butts Wins Another C-USA High Jump Title

HOUSTON, Texas - Sophomore All-America Tynita Butts captured her third career league title in the high jump Saturday as East Carolina continued competition at the 2011 Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
The Pirate women remain in second place with one day remaining, having garnered 39 points and trail first-place SMU by 21 and lead Southern Miss by one. The men reside in sixth with 33 points but are just seven behind UTEP for fourth.
Butts produced a mark of 1.78, just .02 meters behind her outdoor season high to win the championship while she also picked up a fifth-place finish in the long jump. Junior Rebecca Cooper also scored for ECU Friday, taking sixth in the javelin with a throw of 41.02 meters.
On the men's side, five athletes registered points in the field events highlighted by a second-place finish in the discus by Montrell Morrow as he recorded a heave of 53.78 meters. Dennis Aliotta took seventh in the same event, checking in at 46.92. Additionally, all three Pirate pole vaulters combined to garner sixth, seventh and eighth place as Aaron Zakula, Henry Johnson and Stephen Hodapp picked up marks 4.71, 4.56 and 4.56 meters, respectively. Austin Lewis followed those performances with a sixth-place showing in the long jump (7.32 meters).
On the track, most events were contested in the preliminary stage as five women and four men advanced to the finals Sunday in a variety of races.
The league meet concludes tomorrow with action beginning in the field at 5 p.m. The track finals will then commence at 7 with the women's 4x100 relay.
