HOUSTON, Texas - Freshman Aiesha Goggins won the 400-meter dash title to cap East Carolina's participation at the 2011 Conference USA Outdoor Championships Sunday at Holloway Track/Ley Field on the campus of Rice University. The championship completes the season sweep of the indoor and outdoor titles for the rookie as she put up a school-record time of 51.94.
The Pirate women finished in fifth-place, one spot better than last season, while the men took sixth.
Two of the relay squads enjoyed great success Sunday, as the 4x100 men finished just .03 seconds off the pace to capture second-place with a time of 40.24. The 4x400 women also found the podium, snatching third and clocking in at 3:39.58.
A trio of ECU athletes eanred bronze medals, two in the field and the other on the track, as Dennis Aliotta threw 17.55 meters in the shot put, Spencer Barrick heaved the javelin 67.00 meters and Austin Lewis ran a 10.64 in the 100-meter dash. Desmond Lawrence also represented the Pirates in the 100, taking fifth with a time of 10.73.
Last season's C-USA high jump champion, Drew Kanz, was fifth this year with a mark of 1.98 and complemented another fifth-place showing by Kathryn Warner in the pole vault (3.45 meters).
Rounding out the top-five finishers Sunday were underclassmen Joseph Samuels and Jakub Trzasalski, who recorded times of 14.46 and 1:51.61 in the 110-meter hurdles and 800-meter run, respectively.
The NCAA East Regional is scheduled for May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind. The top 48 athletes in each event in the East region will take part. In 2010, East Carolina sent 13 athletes to the regional championships.
