GREENVILLE, N.C. - For the second-straight season, East Carolina will be playing for the right to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Pirates (41-21) fell to Baylor 2-0 Saturday afternoon, but topped Maryland 2-0 in the nightcap to earn a rematch with the Bears (42-12) in Sunday's 12:00 p.m. regional final. East Carolina has to beat the No. 11 national-seed Baylor twice to move to the next round of the post-season tournament.
ECU Against Baylor
Saturday's game against Baylor was the first meeting between the two programs. The teams combined for five singles in a pitchers' duel. The Bears used a passed ball in the top of the first and a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to score both its runs. Whitney Canion limited ECU to two hits, a single by Kristi Oshiro and another by Priscilla Velasquez.
Lots Of Free Softball
During the May 1 series finale against Houston, East Carolina pushed the Cougars to 10 innings before falling 5-3. It was the Pirates' sixth C-USA game that went extra frames and the fourth lasting 10 or more. ECU posted a 3-3 record in extra-inning contests in league play and is 3-5 in all extra-inning affairs.
Up To 17th In NCAA Division I History
Senior Toni Paisley's East Carolina single-season record 389 strikeouts this season have pushed her career total to 1,283. She is now alone in 17th place on the NCAA Division I all-time whiff list. She trails Brooke Mitchell of Louisiana Lafayette (2002-05) by 26 for 16th.
And Moving Up The Career Wins Ladder
Paisley's win Saturday against Maryland was the 118th of her career, moving her into a tie for 18th on the NCAA Division I record chart. Paisley is knotted with Amanda Macenko (Cleveland State/2007-10), Tara Oltman (Creighton/2007-10), Katie Burkhart (Arizona State/2005-08) and Jamie Southern (Fresno State/2001-05) for 18th on the list.
Oh, So Close
Of East Carolina's 21 losses this season, 11 have been by one run and six have been by two runs. During those 17 close setbacks, the Pirates have had the game-tying run on base in the final inning 11 times. The five times ECU did not: a 2-1 walk-off win by UNC Wilmington April 6 in which the Pirates did not have a chance to answer, a 3-1 loss to Maryland Feb. 13 and 2-0 setback at UAB April 16, when East Carolina had the tying run up to bat with a runner on first, a 1-0 loss to Houston April 30, a 5-3 defeat to the Cougars May 1 and a 2-0 defeat to Baylor May 20.
