
Goggins Advances To NCAA 400-Meter Quarterfinal

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Freshman Aiesha Goggins is one step closer to booking her spot in the NCAA Outdoor Championships as she won her heat in the 400-meter dash on the first day of the NCAA East Regional at the University of Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex.
Goggins' time of 53.99 not only placed her first in her heat, but was also the fifth-fastest of the event's first round. The Durham, N.C., native is the reigning Conference USA indoor and outdoor 400m champion and moves on to the quarterfinal round slated for 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.
The Pirates nearly had their first national qualifier of the season earlier in the afternoon, but junior Dennis Aliotta fell one spot and .03 meters short in the shot put, settling for 13th-place with a throw of 17.78 meters.
On the track, seniors Mario Briscoe and Jordan Neil participated in the 400-meter hurdles and 1,500-meter run , respectively, but both fell short of advancing to the next regional stage. Briscoe took seventh in his heat with a time of 54.70 while Neil took ninth in his first-round grouping - clocking in at 3:54.47. Additionally, sophomore Austin Lewis battled the field in the 100-meter dash, recording a time of 10.87.
In the first event of the day, the hammer, a pair of ECU ladies in seniors Maegan Lewis and Kim Kanala wrapped up their seasons by throwing marks of 55.94 and 54.08 meters to capture fifth in their respective flights. Senior Spencer Barrick also ended his campaign by throwing his best distance of the year in the javelin - a heave of 67.01 which was good for 17th overall.
Sophomore all-america high jump specialist Tynita Butts completed the first of her two events Thursday, taking 17th in the long jump with a mark of 6.00 meters. She will compete again tomorrow in the high jump, attempting to qualify for her second-straight NCAA Outdoor Championships appearance.
Action resumes tomorrow starting at 11 a.m. as Aliotta and sophomore Montrell Morrow contest the hammer. Additionally, Goggins will be joined in competition by fellow rookie Tyshonda Hawkins as the latter makes her regional debut in the 200-meter dash at 7:30 p.m.
