BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A freshman will represent East Carolina in the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the second-straight season as Aiesha Goggins posted the second-fastest overall time in the 400-meter dash Friday at the University of Indiana's Robert C. Haugh Track as part of the NCAA East Regional.
Goggins' time of 52.61 was more than enough to earn her a spot at nationals and was the top time in the third heat of the semifinals. The top three runners in each heat as well as the three next fastest athletes will travel to Des Moines, Iowa in order to compete for the national title.
Additionally, Goggins' classmate Tyshonda Hawkins ran a 24.16 in her grouping of the 200-meter dash as she grabbed the final spot in tomorrow's semifinal.
In Friday's field events, junior Dennis Aliotta and sophomore Montrell Morrow competed in the hammer and finished 18th and 22nd with heaves of 59.67 and 58.66 meters, respectively. Sophomore Tynita Butts also closed out her campaign in the high jump, clearing 1.70 meters.
Morrow returns to action Saturday afternoon, vying for a spot at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the discus which starts at 5 p.m. Hawkins will also attempt to finish as one of the top 12 in the 200 as that race is slated for 7:35.
Team-wise, both the men's 4x100 and women's 4x400 relay squads will have a chance to solidify a trip to Des Moines with the events beginning at 6:15 and 9:25 respectively.
