BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – With a school-record time of 3:35.75 in the 4x400 relay, the quartet of Tyshonda Hawkins, Tania Minkins, Tiffany Harris and Aiesha Goggins will represent East Carolina at the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships as the group finished second in its heat Saturday to wrap up the NCAA East Regional at the Robert C. Haugh Track on the campus of the University of Indiana.
The four Pirates represent the most that have qualified for the outdoor national meet in the history of the program on the women’s side in a single season. Goggins will also compete in the 400-meter dash as she ran the second-fastest overall time in the event yesterday. Impressively, all four are underclassmen with Harris the lone sophomore.
Sophomore Montrell Morrow came close to joining his teammates at nationals, but fell three places short in the discus as he finished 15th with a season-high throw of 53.83 meters. Rookie Tyshonda Hawkins also closed out her first year in an ECU uniform with a time of 25.80 in the 200-meter dash. Additionally, the men’s 4x100 relay squad was one of seven in the meet which were disqualified for ranging out of the designated zone.
The NCAA Outdoor Championships will be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa June 8-11.
