
Pirates Blank Georgia Southern, 7-0

GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina men's tennis team improved to 7-2 Sunday, with a 7-0 win over Georgia Southern at the ECU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point, winning two of three finished matches. Joran Vliegen and Nicolas Soriano posted an 8-1 victory over Kyle Hoffman and Matthijs Verdam at the No. 1 flight. John Schmitt and Patriek Wolterbeek also scored an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 spot over Marco Osorio and Albert Codina Sala. The No. 2 match wasn't completed.
Singles saw the Pirates triumph in straight sets at flight No. 1, 2 and 6 to clinch the victory. Vliegen defeated Alain Garrido (6-2, 6-2), Soriano took down Hoffman (6-4, 6-2) and David Masciorini beat Sebastian Feat (6-3, 6-2).
After dropping the opening set, Schmitt and Niels Cleeren each rallied for a three-set win. Schmitt lost the first set at No. 3 to Sala, 4-6, but then won the next two sets 6-1, 6-4. Cleeren fell behind early but won a pair of tiebreakers in his match at No. 4 over Andrew Dromsky, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (4). Damien Brenard also won a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Daniel Rush at No. 5, 6-3, 607 (3), 1-0 (7).
The Pirates return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 against Appalachian State in Boone.
