NEW ORLEANS, La. - After a rough start on day one of the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Classic, the East Carolina women's golf team improved by five strokes on day two, but still currently sits in 15th place following a 20-over 308 on Monday at the English Turn Golf & Country Club.
The 15-team field will begin Tuesday's final round with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. and live scoring will be available at www.golfstat.com. ECU will be paired with golfers from Tulsa and Mississippi and the Pirates will begin from holes 13-15.
ECU started its day from hole No. 10 with Wolte (75) and Faith Hardison (79) each carding back nine rounds of one-under par 35. But the front nine wasn't to kind as Wolte was four-over and Hardison, eight-over. The Freshman duo of Katie Kirk and Emily Eng each posted five-over par rounds of 77 (38-39), while Julia Strandberg is at 12-over (43-41=84).
Defending champion and fourth-ranked USC held on to the top spot despite late charges by No. 17 Colorado and No. 13 Duke. The Women of Troy combined for a 4-over 292, the best of the day by the teams, and is four strokes ahead of the second place Blue Devils and five strokes ahead of the third place Buffaloes. No. 19 Baylor is in fourth place, just six strokes off the lead, while No. 18 Florida is fifth at 17-over par.
Monday's individual race turned into a record setting performance despite the rain, the wind and the chilly weather. Oregon's Cassy Isagawa set a tournament round record with a 7-under 65. The round was the lowest of her career and was one stroke better than the previous record of 6-under 66 set one year ago by Alabama's Stephanie Meadow, also during the second round. Meadow went on to claim individual medalist honors.
