WALLACE, N.C. - The East Carolina women's golf team carded a 4-over 292 and current sit in second place following completion of the first round of the UNCW Seahawk Classic Saturday at River Landing Golf Course.
The 11 teams completed the first 18 holes when play was suspended midway through the second round due to darkness. The golfers will resume the second round at 8:45 a.m. Sunday before wrapping up the 54-hole event with the final 18 holes.
Sporadic rain showers interrupted play several times Saturday, leaving the 62-player field scrambling throughout much of the day.
Longwood overcame the distraction, however by carding a 3-over-par 291, one stroke better than the defending champion Pirates. Old Dominion sits in third place at 294 and host UNCW stands fourth with a 296 score. James Madison (303), Bucknell (306), Charleston Southern (307), Winthrop (308), High Point (311), William & Mary (313) and Marshall (324) round out the field.
Longwood's Amanda Steinhagen recorded one of five sub-par rounds on the day with a 3-under 69. She holds the individual lead over James Madison senior Nicole Sakamoto, who shot a 2-under 70. Three other players - UNCW's Lori Beth Adams, ECU's Faith Hardison (36-35) and Bucknell's Bridget Wilcox - carded 1-under 71 scores.
ECU freshman Katie Kirk (34-38) is tied for sixth after an even round 72, while senior Amy Otteson (35-38) is one stoke back of Kirk in 10th. Rounding out the Pirates roster are freshman Emily Eng (40-36) and sophomore Fanny Wolte (38-39), who are tied for 21st and 27th respectively.
