GREENVILLE, N.C. - Following four-straight setbacks at the DeMarini Invitational, East Carolina (7-10) looks to snap its six-game losing streak Tuesday night with its final contest of the year in California, a single game versus Cal State Fullerton (9-12). First pitch is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. ET.
After the game, the Pirates will travel to Tempe, Ariz., to take part in this weekend's Diamond Devil Invitational, hosted by defending national champion Arizona State.
Saturday and Sunday at the DeMarini Invitational, the Pirates suffered four setbacks, falling to No. 2 California, Northwestern, Indiana and No. 11 Stanford. Sophomore Alex Fieldhouse led the offense, batting a tournament-best .615 (eight-for-13), driving in two runs and scoring two more. The Garden Grove, Calif., native also slugged .692. Senior Priscilla Velasquez and sophomore Jill Jelnick each tallied a team second-best three hits while sophomore Jordan Lewis paced the squad with four runs batted in.
The Pirates Against The Titans
East Carolina has faced Cal State Fullerton once in program history, recording a 2-0 victory March 13, 2010. That contest was part of the Cal Round Robin in Berkeley, Calif. Toni Paisley limited Cal State Fullerton to just one hit and struck out 12 in the complete-game victory. Offensively, Charina Sumner singled to center field to drive in Marina Gusman-Brown in the fifth and Gusman-Brown added an RBI single of her own in the sixth to lift the Pirates.
This season, Fullerton is led on offense by junior outfielder Ashley Carter's .356 batting average, 26 hits and 12 runs scored. In the circle, freshman Desiree Ybarra is 4-5 with a 4.35 earned run average while junior Aly Fascetti is 5-6 with a 5.82 ERA.
Going Deep After A Layoff
Saturday, Lewis hit a two-run home run versus No. 2 California and senior Suzanne Riggs added her team-leading third long ball of the year against Northwestern with a two-run shot in the sixth inning. The Pirates' last homer was a Riggs blast Feb. 17 versus UNCG.
That's More Like It
Coming off a three-error performance against North Dakota State, the Pirates tallied just three miscues in four games last weekend at the DeMarini Invitational.
