2012 Academic All-District Teams
GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina sophomore utility player Jill Jelnick has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 First Team, according to an announcement by the organization Thursday. She holds a 4.00 cumulative grade-point average as an English education major and earned the accolade for the first time in her career.
Due to the first-team nod, Jelnick advances to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first, second and third-team All-America honorees will be chosen later this month.
Jelnick is a two-time recipient of the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal (3.75+ GPA) and has also been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll (3.0+ GPA) twice. In her first three semesters at East Carolina, she has earned a place on the school's Chancellor's List (4.0 GPA). At the end of the 2010-11 academic year, Jelnick was tabbed as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athlete.
On the field in 2012, the Aliso Viejo, Calif., product leads ECU in hits (49) and batting average (.329) while ranking second on the squad in on-base percentage (.408) and walks (18) and third in runs scored (23). During Conference USA games, Jelnick paces the Pirates with 20 hits and owns the club's second-highest batting average (.328) and on-base percentage (.446). In league action, she is tied for seventh in C-USA in walks (12) and for 11th in batting average.
This season, Jelnick owns a team-high 14 multiple-hit games, including seven in C-USA contests. Additionally, she is tied for second on the squad with six multiple-RBI games. During the UAB series in early April, she drove in an East Carolina-best four runs. In the three games against UTEP, she hit .500 and posted a .667 on-base percentage in helping the Pirates to a sweep.
While at the Easton Bama Bash, Jelnick set a career best with four hits against North Dakota State on the final day of the tournament. In a doubleheader at UNC Wilmington, she established personal highs with three stolen bases in the opener and three runs batted in during the nightcap.
Jelnick and the Pirates wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game C-USA series at Memphis (19-34, 7-14 C-USA). The teams play a 2:00 p.m. ET doubleheader Saturday and finish with a 1:00 p.m. ET Sunday matchup.
