GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina's softball team (21-28, 11-10 C-USA) dropped its third-straight game with 3-1 loss to UCF (27-24, 8-14 C-USA) in the first game of the conference doubleheader on Saturday. The Pirates stranded seven runners in taking the loss and have now fallen in six of the last seven games to the Knights.

Sophomore Courtney Smith (5-13) allowed all three runs in throwing her 10th complete game of the season. She only walked one and struck out five in the loss. Shelby Turnier (14-7) was credited with the victory and surrendered just one run in throwing the complete game. Turnier struck out seven and only walked a batter in earning the win.

UCF took the early lead with two runs in the first inning. Farrah Sullivan doubled in Lauren Aldridge from third with the first run of the game. Aldridge drew a one-out walk, stole second and then went to third on the throwing error from ECU on the attempted play at second. Mariah Garcia plated Sullivan with her double to give UCF a 2-0 advantage after half an inning.

ECU loaded the bases with only one out in the third inning, but a line out and strike out ended the promising inning quickly. Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin was hit by a pitch to start the frame and moved to second as freshman Meredith Mitchell punched a bunt over the charging third baseman's head. A sacrifice bunt moved each runner up a base and junior Kristi Oshiro drew a walk to load the bases before the lineout and the strikeout.

UCF capitalized on the change in momentum and scored a tally in the fourth on Kalyn Cenal's home run to left field. The home run was her first of the season.

The Pirates squandered another opportunity to score in the fifth inning. Jelnick started the two-out rally with a double to the gap in left field. She took third on Oshiro's single up the middle, but both would get no farther as a fielder's choice ended the frame.

ECU finally broke through for a run in the sixth inning. Junior Jordan Lewis tripled off the left field wall and scored on freshman Casey Alcorn's sacrifice fly.
