October 12, 2014 | Soccer
MEMPHIS - The East Carolina women's soccer team suffered its first road loss in over a year in a 2-0 setback at Memphis in American Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon.
The loss was ECU's first in an away match in more than a year. Its last road defeat came at UAB (3-2) on Oct. 6, 2013.
Memphis (6-5-4, 3-1-2 American) came out on the attack early and often in the early going, aggressively pushing the ball forward. The Pirates did a good job of holding off the pressure, but Kylie Davis took service from Valerie Sanderson and scored at the 15:03 mark to put the Tigers ahead, 1-0.
The second half began with a fast pace of play, as East Carolina (8-5-1, 2-3-0 American) junior striker Kendall Frey put a shot on goal just over 100 seconds into the period, but it was saved. Memphis countered with two shots on goal and a corner kick chance during the subsequent three minutes, but senior goalkeeper Erika Lenns made two great saves to keep the deficit at one.
The Tigers continued to pressure the ECU defensive unit, earning three more corner kicks and three shots on goal over between the 50th and 67th minute marks, but Lenns continued to stop and corral those scoring chances.
Memphis continued to push forward as the clock continued to work against East Carolina, before Nugene Nugent received a pass approximately nine yards out and inside the ECU penalty area, dribbled around Lenns and finished a shot into the net to put the Tigers ahead, 2-0, and put the game out of reach.
Lenns made six saves on the afternoon, while Memphis goalkeeper Maryse Bard-Martel made three saves in the shutout performance.
East Carolina will return home to host Houston on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., before facing SMU on Senior Day at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 19 at Johnson Soccer Stadium.
