GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina junior forward Kendall Frey and senior defender Kelley Johnson were each named 2014 All-American Athletic Conference Second Team selections, the league announced Thursday evening.
East Carolina (12-7-1, 4-5-0 American) also received the Team Fair Play Award, which is given to the team that accumulates the fewest points combined from total fouls, yellow cards and red cards during league matches.
Frey is in the midst of a career year during her third campaign with the Pirates, as she leads the squad in shots on goal with 23 and game-winning goals with four. She is tied for the team lead with eight goals and 18 points. The Chester Springs, Pa., native has scored in back-to-back games on three different occasions this season, most recently notching three goals in the first two matches of the American Athletic Conference Championship. Her two goals via header were the difference in a 2-1 overtime upset at second-seeded Memphis last Sunday, Nov. 2. Frey was a 2013 All-Conference USA Third Team and C-USA All-Tournament Team choice last season with team highs in goals (6) and points (13).
Johnson, the defensive center back and a team captain for the Pirates, has been the heart and soul of a stout defense that has posted 11 shutouts this season which are tied with the 2007 team for the most in a single season in program history. Opposing teams are shooting just .087 percent on the year and scoring less than a goal per game. The Springfield, Va., native has started each of the last 54 matches for East Carolina dating back to the middle of the 2012 season. Johnson has appeared in 77-career games and logged more than 5,500 minutes of field time during her four seasons, and with one more appearance, will establish herself will move into sixth place on the school's all-time list for games played.
Seeded seventh, East Carolina will play its second straight road match in the 2014 American Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship when it travels to Tampa, Fla., on Friday, Nov. 7, for a semifinal battle against No. 3 seed USF. Opening kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., at Corbett Stadium and will be broadcast online by The American Digital Network.
