GREENVILLE, N.C. - The East Carolina track and field program will send select student-athletes to a pair of final qualifying meets this weekend as the Pirates compete at the Virginia Challenge Saturday, May 10 and the North Carolina A&T Aggie Last Chance Meet Sunday, May 11.
This is the final weekend to qualify for spots in the NCAA Regional before the Conference USA Championship next weekend. The C-USA Outdoor Championship begins Thursday, May 15 and runs through Sunday, May 18 in Houston, Texas and is hosted by Rice.
East Carolina will send four student-athletes to Charlottesville, Va., for the Virginia Challenge in distance runners John Crossley and Jakub Trzasalski, as well as throwers Adam Manns and Chloe Early.
Several Pirates will make the trip to Greensboro, N.C., to compete at the Aggie Last Chance Meet. Among the group that will be heading west are sprinters Cameron Hudson, Joseph Samuels, Erin Tucker and Tania Minkins, as well as pole vaulters Aaron Zakula, Taylor Drummonds, Henry Johnson and Stephen Hodapp, along with jumpers Allen Bordley and Avion Jones.
The Pirates have had a solid outdoor season thus far as they have set eight school records. Sophomore jumper Avion Jones is the only one on the men's side to set a new standard this season as he rewrote the high jump mark with a clearance of 2.19-meters (7-02.25). On the women's side, seven school records have fallen this season as redshirt senior jumper Tynita Butts set a new nation-leading mark of 1.90-meters (6-02.75) in the high jump. Other women's records reset this season include the 200-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay, 4x200-meter relay, shuttle hurdle relay, discus throw and hammer throw.
This weekend, East Carolina looks to continue its success and knock down more school records while preparing for the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
