ECU Hosts UConn In Inaugural American Athletic Conference Event

GREENVILLE, N.C. - After posting a 6-2-1 overall record in non-conference play, the East Carolina women's soccer team will host UConn in its inaugural American Athletic Conference match Thursday night at Johnson Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The women's soccer team will be the first of all ECU athletics programs to officially compete in the new league. The first 100 fans will receive a free inaugural American Athletic Conference event t-shirt.
The Pirates and Huskies have never met on the soccer pitch in the history of their programs and do not share common non-conference opponents in 2014.
Last weekend, the Pirates played to a 0-0 draw at UNC Wilmington for their first tie of the season, before returning home two days later to defeat Campbell, 1-0, on junior Kendall Frey's third goal of the year in the 13th minute.
SEASON OF SHUTOUTS
East Carolina recorded seven shutouts in its nine non-conference matches this season. The seven are the most in a single-season since 2008. ECU recorded a five-match winning streak, including four-straight on the road at Western Carolina (8/24), George Mason (8/29), Francis Marion (9/1) and UNC Greensboro 9/12). The last time the Pirates won five-straight games via shutout was during the 1999 season.
BARON'S BARREN NET
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Saundra Baron posted five-straight shutouts, at Western Carolina (8/24), at George Mason (8/29), at Francis Marion (9/1), home versus Davidson (9/5) and at UNC Greensboro (9/12). She is the first ECU goalkeeper since Amber Campbell in 2007 to accomplish the feat and held opponents scoreless for a span of 505 minutes and 20 seconds. She has six total shutouts so far this season.
LENNS GETS THE CALL
Senior and backup goalkeeper Erika Lenns earned her first-career start and posted a four-save shutout versus Campbell on Sept. 21
SO FARY, SO GOOD
Freshman striker Brittany Fary has started each of the team's first five matches in 2014. The Centreville, Va., native scored her first-career goal in the 6-0 win at Francis Marion on Sept. 1 , earning her American Athletic Conference Rookie-of-the-Week honors.
SPITLER STRIKES
Senior Brianna Spitler and sophomore sister Lana scored both goals in the Pirates' 2-0 win over Davidson (9/5). Lana's goal was the third of her career and first game-winner. After scoring at Francis Marion four days earlier, it marked the first time Lana scored in back-to-back games.
FREY FIRING AWAY
Junior forward Kendall Frey took three shots and scored a goal in each game of ECU's back-to-back wins at George Mason (8/31) and Francis Marion (9/1). She followed that up with a career-high four-shot night and assisted on both goals in a 2-0 win against Davidson (9/5). Last season, Frey scored five goals in a six-game span, capped by a golden goal in a 1-0 win over UTEP in the 2013 Conference USA Tournament.
HITE EXPECTATIONS
Sophomore defender Caitlin Hite was one of 11 players named to the Preseason All-American Athletic Conference Team. In 2013, she became the first freshman in program history to earn all-conference first-team recognition in addition to being listed on the all-freshman team.
