PINEHURST, N.C. -- The East Carolina women's golf team posted a final round 287 (1-under) to claim the Pinehurst Challenge team title with a 54-hole school-record score of 857 Tuesday afternoon. The two-day event was being held at par-72, 5,949-yard No. 1 course.
The Pirates, who won their fourth Pinehurst Challenge team title (2003, 2007-08, 2015), led wire-to-wire carding rounds of 287, 283 and 287 for their second-straight tournament crown of the season. Back on Sept. 29, they ended a 12-year drought by winning the 2015 Lady Pirate Intercollegiate for the first time since 2002. For the first time in program history, the Pirates shot under par in all three rounds winning by six strokes over Chattanooga (863/1-under).
"I'm very excited with the way our team is performing right now," said ECU Head Coach Kevin Williams. "We're being extremely patient on the golf course and playing with great composure. The team is real excited to win in Pinehurst because it's such a special place in our sport. Kate Law showed us in competition what we have been seeing in practice. She has worked hard to improve her short game and it paid off this week!"
Freshman Kate Law carded a career-low score of 211 (70-69-72) claiming a share of fifth, which was her first career top 5 finish. The Maryborough, Australia native carded an eagle on the par-5, 426-yard 18th hole during final round action while ranking among the tournament leaders in par-4 scoring (3.92/second) and total pars (36/t11th).
Sophomore Lisa Pettersson (72-71-71) and senior Frida Gustafsson Spang (72-70-72) each finished tied for 11th with a tournament score of 214 (2-under). In three events this season, both have recorded three-straight top 11 finishes, while finishing among the tournament leaders this week in par-4, par-5 scoring and total birdies.
Rounding out the Pirates roster were senior Nicoline Engstroem Skaug (73-73-75) and freshman Catherine Ashworth (73-76-72), who both claimed a share of 37th with scores of 221. Playing as an individual, senior Lane Gakeler posted a 54-hole score of 237 (21-over) to finish tied for 91st.
William & Mary's Alessandra Liu, who took home top medalist honors at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, shot a tournament record 206 (10-under) finishing three strokes ahead of Elon's Emily Brooks (209/7-under) as the individual winner.
The Pirates (44-1) will close out their fall schedule Oct. 19-20 when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to participate in the Cardinal Cup, which will be held at the University of Louisville Golf Club.
